I'm in a NY State of Mind

Guys! I did it! I landed the job of my dreams in the city of my dreams and I am moving in two weeks. two. weeks. TWO WEEKS! What is my life even? It has already been such a whirlwind. I am living in the world of gym membership cancellations, sublet agreements and road trips. All for the sake of one little dream!

Now, if you have followed my blog journey in any way you have probably noticed that my focus has shifted quite a bit over the months that I have been writing. I have taken a step back from theatre  to focus on other interests, and I am honestly happier than I have been in a while as a result. I mean, we do what we gotta to be happy--and I'm happy, so, I mean…yeah.

So, about 2-ish months ago I became really taken by the e-commerce force that is Birchbox. I love what they do, what they offer, where they are going and what they stand for. I love the foundation of female entrepreneurship and lady leadership. I love that they have paved the way for other companies to feel free enough to offer their services. And I love that they are only beginning! 

I remember early in January spending late nights learning anything I possibly could about Birchbox, and on Janurary 15th, I finally chose to apply. So I sent my cover letter and resume in on a hope and a prayer and waited, and waited a little more. Then I decided that wasn't enough. This company is innovative, they're active and they're changing the way we look at beauty acquisition, so I needed to change the way I approached Birchbox, step up my game if you will.

I subscribed. I immersed myself in their brand, studying what they did and how they executed it. I found that I was immediately taken by their social media presence and their accessibility. I HAD to work there. It wasn't really an option. I knew that I could make a difference with this company--be an advocate for any girl out there scared to take a chance on beauty. 

When I felt that I had exhausted every possible avenue, I said, "You know, Vanessa, maybe it's okay that you can't work for Birchbox, but it doesn't mean that you can't learn from them" So, I reached out. I contacted their community manager, who, might I add, is one of the most gracious individuals I have ever come in contact with. I really just wanted to learn about her career progression so that I could apply her methods to my own journey and better myself. But, to my delight, from my chance email, my leap of faith, she saw something in me! And for that, I am eternally grateful.

The rest is pretty much history. I went through 3 phone interviews and 1 in-person. All very informative and actually rather enjoyable. I will say that everyone I met seemed to be a walking advertisement for Birchbox, though nothing seemed forced. 

I am so honored to announce that beginning April 1st, I will be the new social media associate with Birchbox. This is truly a dream come true for me, and I feel that I have really out done myself. I worked harder than I have ever worked, and was more creative in my approach than I have ever been. If I can offer any piece of advice to anyone reading this who feels that a dream is not attainable, it would be that dreams are as attainable as you allow them to be. It's really hard work, but if you find a middle ground between intellect, creativity, perseverance and passion you will succeed! 

I just want to leave you with this. Below are two identical fortunes. One, I received in December of 2013, when I had absolutely no idea what I wanted, and felt very, very lost. And one I received the day before I got my offer from Birchbox. It may sound a little hokey, but I feel that it has all come full circle. You can't see the second shot as clearly, but they both say "Your present plans are going to succeed". And have they ever!

I am never one to say 'I told you so', but I mean I kinda did….remember this post?

No, but I humbly thank you guys for believing in me! Next time, I'll be writing from the city that never sleeps. 

Oh, and I'll be answering to Carrie Bradshaw from now on…JUST KIDDING…or am I? ;)


PS: If you haven't subscribed to Birchbox, it's time. I am as frugal as they come, and I have never spent $10/mo more wisely!
